Coaching Strategy
Beginners need to learn the motions of the game more than technique. It is important for children to understand the game; however, at a young age, it’s more important for them to have fun playing, and learn through fun games and drills rather than strict lessons. If a child has fun playing the game, they will be better served in the future if they want to play at a competitive level.
Emphasis on fundamentals, principles, and technique are important at the intermediate level. In order for basketball players to develop the proper skills, they must use the skills they learn in drills and work outs in a competitive environment (i.e. competitions, games, etc.).
As players develop the skills to compete, those who want to advance as top level players (i.e. collegiate, semi-professional, professional) need to become physically superior to the competition. Athletes at these levels develop muscle, power, agility, and conditioning. Along with the athleticism required for such levels, advanced players will need to study the game, and learn the different strategies, theories, and methods to compete and be successful.
